This course includes detailed physiology of the body
and psychology of the mind according to the age old axiom of mind
over matter; now called the mind/body connection. This program is
based not only on theory but on the practical application of Yoga
techniques to influence and adjust bodily functions, as well as
balance the energies of the Chakras and direct the mind clearly.
Our course covers the whole Science of Yoga, from the physical
postures of Hatha, to the breath, energy work with the chakras,
to the mind and spiritual levels. At the physical level we cover
over 100 postures (asanas), movement coordinated with breath, and
a variety of breathing techniques for specific purposes. Twelve weeks
of practice bring these into an experience that you can feel and
become confident with. To this we add music and dance in the style
of Egyptian yoga, making it very enjoyable to do the exercises that
usually require “discipline”. Cleansing and body detoxification
are also covered in detail and followed up with discussions on various
types of diets as well as supplements.
Mentally we look at a detailed explanation of physiology as seen
through the Science of Yoga: energy, body chemistry, brain chemistry,
and the role of mind, thought and emotion. Each week or two we delve
into one of the chakras, its physiological location, glandular connection
and function, the energy type and our emotional perception of that,
and the mental characteristics that it manifests. In this way we
develop a deep understanding of the whole mind-body relation. The
mental side of yoga we elaborate on considerably, because in general
it has received very little attention in most western schools. Consequently
we not only go into great detail about how body and mind influence
each other, but we also elaborate on focus, concentration and techniques
to lead the mind through its maze so as to come to a meditative
state.

The spiritual reality of conscious-awareness is examined in detail
as our awareness expands through body feelings and levels of mind
– without affinity to any religious doctrine. Through the
physical practices we become mindful of many new feelings in our
body, creating greater sensitivity of inner body processes and functions.
Mentally this allows us to feel see and understand more of the greater
picture. As the picture expands in our awareness we learn to see
the connection between ourselves, the energy world, and the consciousness
of the universe, providing us with a rather blissful spiritual experience.
At the philosophical level we discuss the roots of yoga and its
past application in many of the cultures of the old world, while
referring to texts and temples of ages gone by. The power of mind
will be elaborated upon in this context. All of this is reflected
back to what we are presently doing with body, mind and spirit.
If you are taking the course just to deepen your own experience,
that is excellent. If you are planning to teach you will find you
have enough confidence to do that as well. We cover many of the
technicalities of teaching as far as setting things up and getting
started. We also look at the mental, physical and energetic aspects
of teaching as compared with simply practicing on your own. We also
cover the logistics and business aspects of getting started as a
teacher.
